Suva Grammar School and Adi Cakobau School are expected to provide stiff competition to the Coca Cola Games Girls defending champion Jasper Williams High School this weekend.
Jasper Williams Head Coach Antonio Raboiliku said ACS has a much stronger squad this year and have nothing to lose as they also want to take the girl’s title back to Sawani.
ACS finished in second place with 8 gold, 12 silver and 4 bronze.
Six gold medalists for ACS last year will be participating again this year.
Senior girls sprinter Alaiwalu Rayawa is up against top favorite Younis Bese in the senior girls 200 metres event.
Rayawa clocked a time of 26.35 seconds in the Triple N Zone while her opponent Bese clocked a time of 25.79 seconds during the Suva Zone 2 meet.
Other gold medal prospects for ACS include Maopa Tabualovoni who will be running in the Intermediate Girls 800 metres event, Laisani Moceisawana who will be running in the Intermediate Girls 100, 200 and 4x100 metres events and Joana Tawake who will be competing in the Junior Girls Javelin event.
They are also aiming to get gold from their Intermediate Girls 4x100 metres team and the Intermediate Girls 4x400 metres team.
The Suva Grammar School girl’s team did not win any gold medals last year however they are optimistic that they can turn things around this year.
The Grammar girls finished in 17th place last year with 3 silver and 3 bronze.
In this year’s Suva Zone 2, Grammar won the girl’s division with 18 gold, 13 silver and 5 bronze.
Out of the 18 gold medals, they are aiming to win 12.
Some of their top bets are Sub Junior Girls long jumper Mereia Vua, Ana Kaitoga who will run in the Sub Junior Girls 400 metres, Titilia Tuirava who will be participating in the Intermediate Girls discus, Kereni Sorowaqali who will run in the Intermediate Girls 400 metres, Lice Vidovi who will compete in the Intermediate Girls 100 metres and Elenoa Veitata who will be competing in the Senior Girls triple jump.
The Coca Cola Games will be held tomorrow and Saturday at the ANZ Stadium.
