Brodie Retallick is out of the first Irish test with Aaron Smith expected to come straight back into the fold.
Retallick joins fellow lock Sam Whitelock on the sidelines, stripping the All Blacks of two classy ball winners and midfield targets.
A decision will be made once on the ground as to when Retallick who suffered a concussion and Whitelock who also suffered a high ankle sprain will travel.
However, Wellington loose forward and lock Vaea Fifita has been called in as a replacement, joining uncapped Crusaders second-rower Scott Barret for the first test against Ireland on the 6th of November.
The All Blacks play Ireland at 9am next Sunday.
