The Melbourne Rebels have issued a lengthy and strongly worded statement insisting the Australian Rugby Union cannot “cut or chop” them from Super Rugby.
The Melbourne Rebels Rugby Union Pty Limited board and management say that they had been told that their position in Super Rugby was not under threat and that the ARU had no right to issue a statement saying their position was in doubt.
The Rebels have expressed great disappointment in the manner in which the matter has been managed and immediately calls on the ARU to publicly state that Rebels cannot and is not being ‘cut or chopped’ from the Super Rugby Competition and advise the public that it had no right to say it could do this or to ‘request the Melbourne Rebels to ‘make its case’.
The Rebels state that although they cannot be “cut” from Super Rugby they have started legal proceedings against the ARU for compensation as the ARU’s actions have damaged their position.
The Rebels will play the Brumbies at 9.45 tonight, in two other matches, the Reds play the Kings at 5.05pm and the Blues face the Hurricanes at 7.35pm.
Meanwhile, in yesterday’s lone match, the Crusaders thrashed the Sunwolves 50-3.
