Queen Victoria School sprinter and Blue Ribbon top contender Ilaitia Waqa Junior is aiming to follow the footsteps of his siblings as he gets ready for this week’s Coca Cola Games.
Waqa won gold in the Intermediate Boys 200 metres event last year.
He won gold in the senior boys 100 and 200 metres events in the Tailevu Zone this year.
The 19-year-old, who hails from Sawaieke Village in Gau, is now chasing his dream to follow his siblings footsteps as a national athlete.
Waqa’s older sister Finau Waqa represented Fiji in the Women’s Beach Volleyball team in the 2003 Pacific Games, his brother Foe Waqa is the former Suva Grammar School and Fiji 400 metres specialist while his mother and mentor Alivina Waqa is the current coach of the Fiji Pearls.
Speaking to Fijivillage, Waqa said he has been training hard to make his family proud.
Waqa’s 100 metres time in the Tailevu Zone Senior Boys final was 11.39 seconds while he clocked a time of 22.44 seconds in the 200m final.
Albert Miller Junior won gold for Marist in the Suva Zone 2 senior boys 100 metres final with a time of 11.43 seconds.
These are manual times.
Banuve Tabakaucoro currently holds the Senior Boys 100 metres record with a time of 10.43 seconds and the time of 21.04 seconds in the 200m.
The senior boys 100 metres heats will be held on Thursday afternoon.
The Coca-Cola Games will start at 4pm Thursday and end on Saturday at the ANZ Stadium.
