Defending champion Police edged Shangri‑La Daveta 19‑12 to top Pool A with Matai scoring two tries.
Matai showed his pace and skills to outrun Nadroga wing Apete Daveta.
The 25-year-old from Tavua says he has been playing 7s for over 10 years now and wants to represent Fiji in the World Sevens Series.
Another player who is outstanding is Tabadamu playmaker Luke Lutu Junior who is the younger brother of former national 7s rep Peni Gaunimeke.
In other matches today, the Aussie Thunderbolts beat Outrigger 21‑7, Red Rock lost 14‑17 to Suva Stallions while Tabadamu beat Hideaway 17-7.
In the women’s division, Striders thrashed Central Chiefs 42-nil, Nadi Blazers beat Mystic Knights 15-5 while NZ Raiders beat Marist Seahawks 17-5.
