Since making his NRL debut in March this year, Fiji born winger Marcelo Montoya has been a revelation for the Bulldogs as he went on to be his club’s top try scorer this season.
Montoya was the first NRL player with Chilean background as his parents hail from the South American nation and Fiji.
He was a revelation for the Bulldogs’ under‑20s side last year, scoring 19 tries in 18 Holden Cup games and running for an average of 133 metres a game.
Born in Lautoka to a Chilean father and Fijian mother, Montoya knows it will be a tough campaign for a spot in the pool matches against the likes of Melbourne Storm star Suliasi Vunivalu, Mikaele Ravalawa, Akuila Uate and Kevin Naiqama.
Montoya’s mother is from Nabaitavo in Naitasiri.
He believes the players have been working really hard.
The Vodafone Fiji Bati will take on USA at 9.40pm this Saturday in the Rugby League World Cup.
Meanwhile the opening match between Australia and England will kick off at 9pm Friday.
