Molly Esther and Iosefo Verevou have respectively won the Fiji Sportswoman and Sportsman of the Year awards during the 2015 Fiji Sports Awards last night.
16-year-old Esther of the Special Olympics Fiji team beat the likes Milika Tuivanuavou of athletics, Valerie Nainima of basketball, Catherine Thaggard of hockey, Taraima Rara-Mitchell of netball and Apolonia Vaivai of weightlifting to win the award.
Esther’s mother Etita Erika said they did not expect her to win.
Esther won gold in the 100m and javelin at the Special Olympics World Games in Los Angeles.
Sportsman of the Year Iosefo Verevou was not present last night to receive his award.
Verevou scored a goal against football giant Germany in the FIFA Under 20 World Cup.
He is also part of the Fiji soccer team that will play in the Rio Olympics.
