25 local and 20 overseas surfers will be battling it out on the waves this weekend during the POWERADE Junior Pro Surfing Competition.

Fiji Surfing Association National Head Coach, Ian Portingale says the whole area of the beach at the Sigatoka Sand Dunes in Kulukulu has been cleared up for the surfing competition.

He adds that local surfer, Jimmy Tomeru who was this year’s Under 18 competition winner at the Lighthouse event in Suva will go into the surfing event as Fiji’s number 1 seed and will also need to bring his best performance to be able to defeat the strong international field also participating.

Portingale says they are looking forward to hosting the inaugural event and a chance for local surfers to compete and represent Fiji.

He says Sunshine Coast surfers Holly and Sam Williams will also be part of this weekend’s Powerade Junior Pro.

The prizemoney for the Under 18 boys is $1,000 while the Under 18 girls division is $600.

There is also an Under 16 division.

The opening ceremony of the surfing competition will start at 4pm this Friday at Club Masa, Sigatoka while the Powerade Junior Pro Surfing Competition will begin at 7.30am this Saturday with the finals running on Sunday.
