The Lions have held off a late Chiefs fightback, coming out on top of their Super Rugby match 23‑17 in Hamilton last night.
The home team were their own worst enemies in the first half, with the Lions slotting two penalty kicks from scrum infringements to give the visitors a 6‑0 lead after 34 minutes.
Two tries for the Lions just before the break to give their side a 20‑0 lead at halftime.
The Chiefs came to life in the final quarter, with Sean Wainui, Nepo Laula and Tumua Manu scoring tries to give their side a sniff of a comeback win.
But Lions' no.12 Elton Jantjies came up with a clutch 30‑metre drop goal in the 79th minute to give his side a six‑point lead.
From there, the Chiefs were unable to get the ball back from their final kick‑off, with the Lions holding on to win their fifth Super Rugby match of the season.
In other matches played, the Hurricanes defeated the Sunwolves 29-23 while the Reds defeated the Sharks 21-14 this morning.
Tonight, the Highlanders take on the Blues at 7.35pm, the Waratahs will meet the Rebels at 9.45pm while the Stormers meet the Brumbies at 1.05am tomorrow.
