Ardie Savea scored a late try to help the Hurricanes edge the Highlanders 27-20 in Wellington.
The Highlanders had won the previous two Super Rugby matches between the teams including last year’s Super Rugby final in Wellington.
The Waratahs kept their hopes of reaching the Super Rugby playoffs alive by beating the Chiefs 45-25 last night.
This victory is their fourth in a row against the Chiefs in Sydney and is crucial as they are in a battle for the top spot in the Australian conference with the Brumbies.
The Waratahs led 17-13 at halftime.
In other results, the Southern Kings won their second match of the Super Rugby season by beating the Jaguares 29-22.
The Jaguares finished the match with 12 players.
They lost two players to red cards and one to a yellow card.
The Crusaders meet the Blues at 7.35 tonight while the Brumbies face the Sunwolves at 9.40pm.
