It was burglary of the highest order but the Chiefs could only blame themselves as the Highlanders took a 20‑17 Super Rugby victory in Hamilton last night.
Just when the Chiefs looked set for their fourth win in as many matches, the visitors snatched the game with two Marty Banks penalty goals in the last four minutes, the last one with time up.
With both Chiefs five‑pointers penalty tries from illegally stopped scrum pushovers, this was a far from satisfying effort from the home team who paid the price for poor goal‑kicking from All Black No. 10 Aaron Cruden.
Meanwhile in one other match, the ACT Brumbies spoiled a try‑scoring return to Super Rugby for Wallabies winger Nick 'Honey Badger' Cummins with a 27‑15 bonus point victory over Western Force at Canberra Stadium.
The Brumbies ran in three tries in the first half through Rory Arnold, Joe Tomane and Ben Alexander and Nic White grabbed the fourth after the break but it was strong defence as much as attack that secured them a 10th straight victory at home.
In tonight’s game, Blues will take on the Lions at 6.35pm while the Reds will meet the Waratahs at 8.40pm.
