Mana Whey Fiji Coral Coast 7s defending champion First Light Taveuni struggled in their opening match this morning after having a hard-fought 14-12 win over Sigatoka River Safari Henibua.
Former national 7s rep and First Light Taveuni captain Lemeki Tulele scored the winning try in the last minute.
First Light was trailing 12-7 at halftime.
Tulele says they have a lot of work to do before their second pool match against a tough Police 7s team.
He adds they have not given up despite losing most of their players to the Cross of Victory Taveuni side.
Meanwhile, McDonald’s Saunaka 7s team which is laced with several former national reps had to work hard to beat the Tovolea 7s team 12-5 in their opening match.
Saunaka led 12-0 at halftime.

Kitione Taliga, Vatemo Ravouvou, Pio Tuwai, Masivesi Dakuwaqa and Nacanieli Batina are playing for the McDonald's Saunaka 7s team.
Looking at the results of the first round of pool matches, Suva Stallions beat Ravuka Sharks 24–19, Lomavata Blues beat Outrigger 17–5, McDonalds Saunaka edged Tovolea 12-5, Ratu Filise outclassed Hong Kong 22-10, Stars USA beat BLK Iron Courage 10-5, Wardens defeated Cross of Victory 17-12 while Police beat Daveta 22-17.
The Crest Na Iri Trophy Cup quarterfinals are currently underway.
