Fiji has not made any indication to the Pacific Games Council about hosting the 2019 Pacific Games after Tonga withdrew as the host last week due to financial concerns.
But, the President of the Fiji Association of Sports and National Olympic Committee Joseph Rodan Senior says they will be closely watching the outcome of the Pacific Games Council meeting this Saturday.
Rodan says Fiji has the right people and facilities to organise and host the Pacific Games.
Fiji last hosted the Pacific Games in 2003.
The Pacific Games Council says Fiji has strong credentials to the host the Pacific Games.
Chief Executive Officer Andrew Minogue has declined to comment on whether the Pacific Games Council has already received notification from certain countries about hosting the games but says they have been pleased with the support shown by Fiji.
Minogue says the Executive Council will meet this Saturday to go through a whole range of options on what steps they can take and one of those will be whether the Tongan government will be willing to reassess the position it has taken.
Samoa’s Prime Minister Tuila'epa Sa'ilele Malielegaoi has publicly said that Samoa would bid for the 2019 Pacific Games.
