Fiji has avenged their Pacific Mini Games final defeat at the hands of Vanuatu by thrashing them 5‑1 in a match of the OFC Women’s Nations Cup Qualifier at Churchill Park yesterday.
Fiji’s first goal was netted by Cema Nasau in the sixth minute.
Fiji continued to have the majority of possession and chances in front of goal with Nasau combining well with Fiji’s 17‑year‑old US‑based striker Trina Davis to create goal scoring opportunities.
The Vanuatu side was unable to keep up with the Fijian team’s pace.
Vanuatu made a change in the 74th minute while already five goals behind, bringing in Annie Gere whose first touch a minute later resulted in a goal for Vanuatu.
That lone goal was not enough however as Fiji maintained their lead to take a significant 5‑1 victory.
Fiji Coach Marika Rodu says the win was just dessert for the hard work the players and coaching staff have put in since the loss in the Pacific Mini Games final in December last year.
Rodu is also aware that this is only one game in the bag with two more to go in a difficult format.
Fiji will now take on Solomon Islands at 3pm on Monday at the Churchill Park in Lautoka.
