The Fiji Rugby Union has begun its preparations for the 2017 National Rugby Championship which kicks off on Saturday 2nd September in Canberra.
The fixtures for the tournament was released today by the Australian Rugby Union and FRU CEO, John O’Connor says that for Fiji to be able to play in the NRC is a huge stepping stone and a historic development for the union.
O’Connor adds that the inclusion of the Fiji Team which will comprise of 30 locally based players will be beneficial not only for the union but for the players as well.
O’Connor says that the selection into this team ensures that the local based players are on the pathway towards becoming a World Class player in terms of the proper training programs and personal development that will benefit the Flying Fijians.
The NRC season kicks off with Canberra Vikings and Queensland Country doing battle at Viking Park, Canberra.
Hours later, Fiji will play their historic first NRC match against two-time Premiers, Brisbane City at Ballymore in Brisbane.
Fiji will host their first match in Round 3 at Lawaqa Park in the rugby-mad town of Sigatoka, to clash with NSW Country Eagles.
A total of four home games will be played in Fiji with Churchill Park in Lautoka, Lawaqa Park in Sigatoka and ANZ Stadium set to host these games.
