The Fiji Association of Sports and National Olympic Committee (FASANOC) will now rely on government to revise Boxing Commission of Fiji Promulgation of 2008 so that it can send boxers to participate in this year’s Pacific Games.
This was confirmed in a statement sent by FASANOC regarding the meeting that they have with the Amateur Boxing Association of Fiji an association established by the Fiji Boxing Commission.
FASANOC Vice President Manasa Baravilala said the International Boxing Association has sent a firm directive to FASANOC stating that having sanctioned the Pacific Games boxing competition, it will only accept boxers from its recognized national federation which is the Fiji Amateur Boxing Association.
The International Boxing Association stance was the result of the inclusion of amateur boxing in the Boxing Commission of Fiji Promulgation 2008 where they viewed the Promulgation as Government interference in sport and contrary to the principle of the autonomy of sport.
However, FASANOC is pleased to have received very positive advice from the Ministry of Youth and Sport that the necessary amendments to the Boxing Commission of Fiji Promulgation 2008 will be tabled at the first sitting of Parliament in February.
FASANOC said they are looking forward to the approval by Parliament, which will pave the way for holding an Annual General Meeting and subsequent processes to facilitate the selection of boxers and their participation at the Pacific Games.
The Pacific Games will be held from July 4th to 18th.
