The Fiji Association of Sports and National Olympic Committee has appealed to the new Minister for Youth and Sports Laisenia Tuitubou for Government to amend the Boxing Decree so that Fiji boxers can take part in international tournaments.
Amateur boxers in Fiji remain banned from overseas events sanctioned by the International Boxing Association including the Pacific Games in Papua New Guinea next year, the Commonwealth Games and the Olympics.
This came about after the Government dissolved the Fiji Amateur Boxing Association in 2011 to try to improve the sport, under powers of the Fiji Boxing Decree of 2008.
FASANOC President Reg Sanday said until and unless the decree is amended, amateur boxers will not be able to box overseas.
He said work has been going on behind the scenes involving FASANOC and stakeholders such as the Fiji Boxing Council, National Sports Commission and the boxing fraternity to develop a Constitution and conduct fresh elections for a new body to run amateur boxing in Fiji when the decree is amended.
FASANOC Board briefed Tuitubou and the Assistant Minister,Iliesa Delana on FASANOC plans and have placed a request to the Minister to follow up a proposal to amend the Boxing Decree that had been submitted earlier this year.
