Everton's new stadium will be a "key part" of Liverpool's bid to host the 2022 Commonwealth Games.
The club announced a deal to acquire land at Bramley Moore Dock on which to build the new $37 billion ground.
Mayor Joe Anderson says that talks about using the stadium, which is expected to cater for a 50,000 audience will happen in due course.
Liverpool has expressed an interest in hosting the event in 2022 after the original hosts Durban pulled out.
Meanwhile, in an English Premier League match Everton will face Liverpool on 1st April at11.30pm.
