Melbourne Storm's Cooper Cronk and the Canberra Raider's Josh Hodgson did battle on the field on last night and the two are expected to square off again as the frontrunners for Wednesday's Dally M medal.
Cronk, Hodgson, Ryan James, Cameron Smith, James Taumalolo and defending champion Johnathan Thurston are in the hunt to take out Rugby League's greatest individual honour.
Thurston dominated last year's count on his way to claiming a record fourth medal, winning by a record 11 votes.
This season will be much closer.
Meanwhile, Melbourne Storm held on to beat the Canberra Raiders 14-12 in a tight semi final and set up a National Rugby League title decider against the Cronulla Sharks.
The 2016 NRL Grand final between Melbourne Storm and Cronulla Sharks will kick off at 8.15pm next Sunday.
