Portugese football star Cristiano Ronaldo has reached a deal with Spanish authorities to settle a tax evasion case by paying a NZD$31 million fine and accepting a suspended jail sentence.
Real Madrid's all‑time highest scorer, who scored a hat trick for Portugal in their 3-all draw against Spain in their first match at the FIFA World Cup this morning, is the latest in a long line of top football players to be accused of tax evasion since a crackdown by Spanish courts.
The 33‑year‑old is accused of evading NZD$25 million in taxes. He has denied the allegations.
Meanwhile, in other FIFA matches played this morning, Uruguay beat Egypt 1-0, while Iran defeated Morocco 1-0.
