Some desperate defence and a late try to replacement wing Wes Goosen wasn’t quite enough as the Hurricanes lost 17‑14 to the Chiefs at Westpac Stadium last night

After Round 16 the Hurricanes remain in second place on the New Zealand Conference ladder on 54 points, one ahead of the Chiefs (53), courtesy of what may be a valuable bonus point.

The Crusaders have wrapped up the New Zealand Conference title with 63 points, but the result of the Hurricanes final match, against the Crusaders on July 15 in Christchurch, could have a significant bearing on where the side play in the first round of the eight team playoffs.

Meanwhile, a knee injury to Aaron Cruden forced a reshuffle to the Chiefs backline for the second half with Shaun Stevenson entering the game and Damian McKenzie moving into first five.

In Round 15 of the Super Rugby competition the Jaguares will take on the Kings at 6.05am July 1st, on July 2nd the Lions will play the Sunwolves at 12.30am, Cheetahs meet the Stormers at 1.05pm while the Sharks take on the Bulls at 3.15am.
