The Chiefs Super Rugby title hopes has been seen as almost non‑existent.
For a second year in succession they will travel to Cape Town to face the Stormers in the quarter finals, and while that in itself is indeed a winnable fixture, the fact they will have to return to New Zealand for a semifinal is the big issue, not to mention a final the following weekend, which could be in Johannesburg.
Meanwhile if the Crusaders win their quarterfinal, the semifinal would be in Christchurch, while if the Highlanders win, the semifinal would be in Hamilton.
The Chiefs will take on the Stormers at 3am Sunday.
In other quarters, the Brumbies will host the Hurricanes at 9.35pm Friday, the Crusaders will host the Highlanders at 7.35pm Saturday while the Lions will take on the Sharks at 12.30am Sunday.
