Michael Cheika has refused to back down from comments he made labelling the All Blacks and New Zealand media disrespectful on the same day his counterpart Steve Hansen told the Wallabies coach to "stop whining" after his post‑match "meltdown".
Cheika's press conference after the Wallabies' 37‑10 defeat to the All Blacks at Eden Park was one for the ages as he attacked a local news organisation for printing a cartoon of himself dressed up as a clown and expressed his anger at being implicated in the bugging scandal that flared up when the teams first met this year in Sydney in August.
All Blacks coach Hansen hit back at Cheika saying he "hijacked" the occasion with his outburst on Saturday night, but the Australian boss was not going to give in when asked about his remarks after touching down in Sydney yesterday.
Cheika said that they asked him to make a comment about the All Blacks achievement and Cheika said that he didn't think they cared about his comment.
He says he could go on with all the politically correct stuff but why would you let the opposition call your team clowns and mock the jersey?
Under normal circumstances, the All Blacks would be the first of the two teams at the post‑match press conferences but on Saturday the hosts insisted on going second, understood to be because they wanted to react to what Cheika had to say given he appeared quite animated in his coaches' box.
Hansen continued to stir the pot on Sunday, telling Cheika to pull his head in and make it known that the offer of a beer would have in fact been on the cards.
