Beauden Barrett has suddenly become a favourite to be the Hurricanes' skipper for 2018.
Designated captain Dane Coles is set to miss all of the upcoming Super Rugby season, after a serious knee injury while playing for New Zealand against France.
Coach Chris Boyd says Coles is due for surgery next week and best‑case scenario is that he will return to the Hurricanes in late June and the worst is that he is done for the next nine months.
TJ Perenara also proved a very able stand‑in skipper this year, when concussion kept Coles sidelined.
Boyd is working on the basis that Coles will be available for games against the Blues in July 7 th and Chiefs on July 13th and then the playoffs, should the Hurricanes qualify.
