Lionel Messi and his Argentina side defeated the Netherlands 4-2 on penalties to reach the World Cup final after two hours of defence-dominated football failed to provide a semifinal goal for the first time in the tournament's history.
Argentina goalkeeper Sergio Romero made two brilliant saves during the penalty shoot outs.
Romero has been a reserve all season at his club Monaco and his selection was one of the controversies before the world cup.
In an interview Romero told Argentines to “enjoy the moment but tomorrow they will start working for the final”.
Netherlands struggled to build any meaningful attacks and completed 90 minutes without a shot on target as Robben’s last-minute effort was brilliantly blocked.
It will be the third time Argentina and Germany, or West Germany, meet in the final, with West Germany winning the last clash in 1990.
Argentina will play Germany at 7am on Monday in final while the Netherlands will meet Brazil in the third‑place playoff at 8am on Sunday.
