Peru has secured the final spot in the Russia 2018 FIFA World Cup after breaking Kiwi hearts with a dominant 2‑0 win over New Zealand this afternoon.
The Kiwis’ playoff against South American powerhouse Peru was delicately poised after a 0‑0 draw in New Zealand in the first leg.
However, the Kiwis barely threatened the Peru defence after Peru took an early 1‑0 lead in the 28th minute.
From there it was all one‑way traffic.
Despite their world No. 10 ranking, the Peruvians had not qualified for football’s showpiece event since 1982.
The end of their 36‑year World Cup exile has sparked incredible celebrations right across the country.
