A total of 33 athletes of Team Fiji received over $30,000 from the Bank of the South Pacific today under their Banking on Gold program which was launched prior to the Pacific Games.
BSP Country Manager, Kevin McCarthy says the cash reward is a partial contribution towards the costs that 80 percent of the athletes prepared for such events at their own costs.
Each athlete who won gold at the Pacific Games received $500 and an extra $1,000 bonus was given to athletes who won more than one gold medal.
Meanwhile, Pacific Sprint King Banuve Tabakaucoro was one of the athletes who received $1,000 bonus.
Tabakaucoro says his experience in PNG was beyond his expectation and he says there is a lot of improvement needed.
The Karate team was also acknowledged for their tremendous performance in the Pacific Games since it’s a minor sport but they made Fiji proud by winning seven gold medals.
