India pledges US$1M to help Fiji’s Presidency at COP 23 Meeting

The Government of India has pledged USD$1 million to help with Fiji’s Presidency at the COP 23 Meeting later this year in Bonn, Germany.

This has been highlighted by the Minister for State of External Affairs Vijay Kumar Singh at the Opening of the India-Pacific Islands Sustainable Development Conference this morning.

Singh says India will also provide technical assistance for capacity building in the Pacific region to help combat climate change.

He says this should be a good opportunity to assert the Pacific’s stand on the effects of Climate Change at the global arena.

Acting Prime Minister Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum thanked the government of India for its continuous support and assistance in Fiji and in the Pacific.

Sayed-Khaiyum says that the ties between India and the Pacific Islands will help the lives of our people in Fiji and the Pacific Islands fight against the impacts of climate change.

He adds that the Fiji - India relationship will see to the development of our economies and increasing the capacity of Pacific governments to deliver services and security to our people.

Today’s meeting saw to the exchange of Memorandums of Understanding in the establishment of the India‑Fiji IT centre, sustainable/renewable energy cooperation, youth development and a MOU between Prasaar Bharti Broadcasting Cooperation and FBC.

Prime Minister of India Narendra Modi has sent well wishes to the delegates in the two day India - Pacific Islands Sustainable Development Conference.

Present in the conference, Finance Ministers of Cook Islands, Niue, and Samoa, the President of Federated States of Micronesia, members of the diplomatic corp, delegates from the Indian government and Fiji’s Roving Ambassador Litia Mawi.
