Minister for Health, Rosy Akbar has revealed that the youngest person living with Type 1 Diabetes is two years old and is admitted at the CWM Hospital.
While speaking at the World Diabetes Day at Nadi's Koroivolu Park Akbar says that at one time, people used to think that diabetes was mostly with elderly people but it is now coming down to young people.
Akbar also highlighted that the youngest person pregnant woman living with diabetes is 19‑years old.
Akbar has also pleaded with the public to take their health seriously, particularly as the country notes a high number of deaths from diabetes.
She says Fiji continues to rank high in terms of Non‑Communicable Diseases and earlier this year was noted to have the highest rate of diabetes‑related deaths.
Akbar also stated that in Fiji, the total number of people living with Type 1 Diabetes from 2014 to 2018 is 500 with an estimate of 56,000 adults in Fiji living with diabetes according to a study by the Pacific Eye Institute.
