Younger brother allegedly murdered over dhal

Aisake Vana Junior is charged with one count of manslaughter

The trial of a man charged with killing his younger brother last year after an argument over a bowl of dhal started in the Suva High Court today.

Aisake Vana Junior is charged with one count of manslaughter.

He allegedly stabbed his brother, Suliasi Veisere on the 5th of April, 2016 at their family home in Kalabu.

The accused pleaded not guilty before High Court Judge Justice Vinsent Perera today.

The prosecution will call four witnesses.

The sister in law of the accused, Salanieta Divolivoli took the stand as the first prosecution witness in court this morning.

She told the court that on the 5th of April last year the deceased and the accused argued about a bowl of dhal.

Divolivoli said the deceased had asked the accused why he had eaten his bowl of dhal.

The first prosecution witness also said that the two then started swearing and fighting in the sitting room.

She said that she also heard the deceased telling the accused not to get hold of the knife.

Divolivoli told the court that she was smoking in the toilet passage when the incident happened

She said when she returned Suliasi Veisere was lying on the floor with blood on his hands.
