Xavier College student, Aidah Zaahirah today honoured the thousands of Girmitiyas who were transported to Fiji through what she strongly called a system of slavery.
She says the Girmitiyas were very cunningly deceived being given false re-compensation such as wealth, freedom and prosperity that lured them into signing their lives away.
In her speech at the 140th Girmit Day celebrations held at Albert Park in Suva, Zaahirah says because of the nature of Indian society this breakdown was much greater than most migrations.
People from all over the country filled the Albert Park pavillion as they watched the performances by fellow students and cultural groups on the Girmitiyas.
