Raising awareness on the issue of Antimicrobial Resistance with the focus on the Animal Health Sector was highlighted during the World Antimicrobial Awareness Week launch at Novotel in Lami.
While launching the program Permanent Secretary for Agriculture David Kolitagane says Antimicrobial Resistance was an important issue that affected animal life, animal health and most importantly human health as building a resilient sector was critical.
He stated that Antimicrobials cover a wide range of pharmaceutical products that are used to combat bacterial, viral and parasitic infections in both human and animal health.
Kolitagane says at the national level, the focus of Antimicrobial Resistance ‑related activities have largely been on the human health sector.
Kolitagane urged experts to identify the challenges faced by the sector and to create substantive plans to help the Ministry and key stakeholders improve current practices in Fiji.
