Thirty-six women and transgenders from around the country are currently undergoing a four day workshop to promote young women’s development based on Gender, Violence against Women and Human Rights.
Fiji Womens Crisis Center Coordinator Shamima Ali said with the latest statistics on sexual, physical abuse and child neglect, there is a greater need to have workshops such as this.
Ali said the more young women start learning about the dynamics and stop blaming themselves, the more it will act as a deterrent to potential rapists.
She added this will then result in the change of attitudes in the communities.
Ali said these participants are also participating in the Young Women’s Parliament.
Meanwhile, latest statistics show that Fiji has recorded 38 cases of sexual abuse in the first three months of this year with 25 cases of physical abuse and 22 cases of child neglect also recorded in the first three months.
