Officers from the Police Special Response Unit will continue to guard ballot boxes at the Fijian Elections Office warehouse in Laucala Beach while the remaining officers who were deployed for the 2018 Election duties will return to normal routine operations.
In a statement, Police Commissioner Sitiveni Qiliho has highlighted that since the Writ of Elections was issued on the 1st of October, 2018, Police officers have been deployed for various duties leading up to the return of the Writ yesterday afternoon.
Qiliho says that officers from the Police Special Response Unit were initially deployed to the Fijian Elections Office Warehouse commencing the first phase of special operations while up to 2000 officers prepared for deployment for both the pre-polling, Election day and pre-polling operations.
He has also revealed that it has been a tiring and testing time for the Force’s operational arm and has commended the work conducted by all officers.
Qiliho has stated that with the General Elections over, the focus now turns to the upcoming festive season.
The Police Commissioner says they are still monitoring the security situation during the post-election period but their focus is also on the busy festive season and the school holidays.
Qiliho says he is optimistic of receiving the same level of cooperation from the public in working with Police during the Festive season.
He says that there is no rest for the Fiji Police Force and their officers are ready for the next major operational phase and ensuring all Fijians and visitors to our shores can enjoy a safe and incident free Christmas with their loved ones.
