Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama Chancellor Merkel and Germany's Minister for Environment Barbara Hendricks

Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama met with German Chancellor Angela Merkel at the Petersberg Dialogue in Berlin, Germany yesterday.

Bainimarama says Fiji owes Chancellor Merkel a debt of gratitude for setting an example.

He has also thanked Germany for backing Fiji’s presidency of COP 23.

Speaking at the Dialogue, Bainimarama says we must all work harder to protect the security of those areas that have more risk to climate related disasters such as Fiji.

He says that putting this into action requires leadership at every level of government and society.

The Prime Minister stresses that the rapid development of new technologies and converging technologies in clean energy, storage and electric vehicles are not only good for our climate but good for our economies, our peoples’ health and the quality of the air they breathe.

Bainimarama says that we are learning that renewable energy is actually becoming cheaper than relying on fossil fuels and we must continue to spread the benefits of this innovation in the kind of partnerships emerging in the climate action agenda.
