SODELPA MP Salote Radrodro says the Minister for Waterways Dr. Mahendra Reddy should be ashamed of himself to stand up and have the audacity to say things in Parliament and all the time there is flooding in the country.
Radrodro stated this after Dr. Reddy gave detailed information about dredging works on a number of rivers around the country which are in progress and some will start soon.
They include Sigatoka River, Nakauvadra River, Labasa River, Qawa River, Qeleqa River, Rewa River, Vunivau River in Navua and Navua River.
Salote Radrodro was not satisfied with these details.
She questioned Dr. Reddy on the progress of the establishment of new regulations to manage the urban drainage system.
Reddy told parliament Radrodro would have got the answers if she would have listened to his ministerial statement.
He says they first want to develop a national waterways policy leading to a waterways legislation and they have already drafted a cabinet paper for this.
He also updated parliament that from the $24.2 million that has been allocated to the Ministry for Waterways, $3.7M is for operating grant which looks after wage earners, maintenance and operations of the Ministry and purchase of goods and services.
He says $19.2 million is for capital expenditure.
