The Water Authority of Fiji is currently working on a long term plan to have a new Viria Water Treatment Plant to boost the supply of water to the Suva-Nausori corridor.
Authority Chief Executive Officer Opetaia Ravai has also revealed that the Water Authority has the capacity to supply 40 mega litres of water on a daily basis and these works will increase the capacity to 80 mega litres.
Ravai says the Authority understands the frustration and the inconvenience that has been caused due to the intermittent supply of water.
He says that with the Water Programme, Water Authority is committed to fixing this issue.
Ravai also says that immediate works will start to improve water supply to the lower Rewa Delta area.
He says that works are expected to begin as early as next month as the Water Authority has sought the approval of the Fiji Roads Authority to begin laying pipes across the Wainibokasi Bridge.
Ravai says that the Authority has also started installing air valves across the current system past the Wainibokasi Bridge.
He adds that a plan is in place for the Water Authority to reticulate and put in new pipes in the Rewa Delta area, where it is difficult to detect leaks due to the swampy conditions.
Ravai says this is to improve the supply of water to these areas and the Authority is committed to replacing water pipes where necessary.
He adds that to further improve water pressure to the growing number of customers, the Water Authority has started laying water pipes in Duilomaloma Road, and they will eventually have to run a 400mm pipe from the Rewa Bridge.
Ravai also highlighted that next year Water Authority has plans to build a reservoir in Raralevu which will help with the hydraulics of the system that increases water pressure and storage as well.
