The national launch for Walesi Digital Television was done today which means those people who were not connected to digital television will get so in the next coming weeks and months.
Acting Prime Minister and Minister for Communication Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum announced this in Nadi.
He told the people of Nadi that those who earn below $30,000 a year, will be able to access set up boxes for free.
Sayed-Khaiyum says Suva, Nausori, Navua, Sigatoka, Rakiraki, areas in Tailevu, Savusavu Town, Taveuni and Vunisea in Kadavu are now connected with Walesi.
He says in the coming weeks and months, Levuka Town, the greater Ba area, interior of Tavua, Vatukoula and the greater Labasa area will also get connected to Digital TV.
The islands of Cikobia, Koro, Vanuabalavu, Lakeba, Ono-i-Lau and parts of Kadavu, Cicia, Matuku and Totoya will also get connected in the next few months.
Sayed-Khaiyum has also revealed that these highly remote areas will also be using satellite dishes to send back information especially during times of disasters.
He says the dishes will be available by the end of January.
Sayed-Khaiyum says people will have to simply have get in touch with Walesi, place their order and they will be able to get the dishes as soon as they are in Fiji.
The cost of the satellite dishes to be used by residents in the remote areas, are not confirmed as yet.
