The Water Authority of Fiji is working on a new proposed Matani Water Source which will extend the water supply coverage in Labasa which includes the Vunika area.
This is after a resident in Vunika called for a better solution to their water related issues during the dry season at a Budget Consultation in Labasa.
The Authority says they are working on a 5 year plan which is part of their 2019/2020 Capital Budget Submission to the Government for this new water source to be commissioned.
The Water Authority adds that there are plans in place to do an in‑house review of the Labasa Water Supply Master Plan for back up studies and investigation works.
This will look at available options to extend its water supply coverage, especially to areas where water is carted during prolonged dry spells that is outside of its existing coverage.
They say that in the construction phase of the Matani Water Source, laying of pipes and upgrading works at Benau Water Treatment Plant with a new reservoir are planned to be funded from the 2020/2021 to 2022/2023 Capital Budgets.
