Within three months, the Water Authority of Fiji will have the legal right to take action against companies disposing illegal waste at the Kinoya Treatment Plant.
Infrastructure and Local government Minister, Parveen Bala told parliament that cabinet endorsed the Trade Waste Policy last month and it will be gazetted in 3 months.
He says the policy will ensure that there are regulations and enforceable penalties for companies who do not carry out any pre-treatment to their waste before it is brought to the treatment plant.
Opposition MP Niko Nawaikula then questioned why such a serious issue has not been resolved by the government.
Bala then responded to Nawaikula saying that this is an age old problem and it is only the FijiFirst government that is now trying to address it.
