The whole of the rural population is being affected by the dry weather condition in the Western and Northern divisions and the Water Authority of Fiji has spent over $3 million to supply water to the various affected areas.
Water Authority of Fiji CEO Opetaia Ravai says that the situation is concerning especially in the North Western parts of Viti Levu around Ba, Tavua and Rakiraki.
He says water trucks are also being sent to areas in the Northern division especially Nagigi, Valebasoga, Vunivau, Tabia and Waiqele.
Ravai says that the dry spell in the Central division is not as bad, as these areas have had rain in the last few days.
He says that the Regional Manager in the West has confirmed that Sigatoka and Nadi have experienced rain in the last few days but there is still insufficient amount of rain in Ba, Tavua and Rakiraki.
Ravai says that everyday of the week, there are areas that are being included to the list for water cartage as wells in the area have begun to dry up due to the current weather situation.
Ravai adds that at least 95 to 100 trucks are being used each day to cart water costing Water Authority $1.5 million a month.
He says that the number of trucks could increase if the dry conditions continue.
