The Water Authority of Fiji is concerned about the increasing number of companies that are not carrying out any waste pre-treatment before it is brought to their Wastewater Treatment Plants.
It has been revealed that only 10 companies carry out waste pre-treatment.
Water Authority of Fiji CEO Opetaia Ravai says the commercial and industrial waste they get at treatment plants is animal fat, paint, chicken blood and lint.
He says some of these industrial waste damage their machines and enhance the odour levels at their Wastewater Treatment plants and pumping stations.
Ravai says the best way to implement pre-treatment is through the Trade Waste Policy which will ensure that there are regulations and enforceable penalties for companies who do not comply.
