The Water Authority of Fiji is aiming to replace 26, 000 ceased water meters around Fiji.
Under the 2014 Meter Replacement Program, the target was to replace 26, 000 ceased water meters but Water Authority managed to replace 26, 444 defective and ceased meters nationally.
Spokesperson, Navinesh Kumar said Water Authority is tendering for a preferred supplier to supply them with new meters for the next two years and to supply a quantity of at least 30, 000 meters a year.
Kumar said the main priority areas covered last year was the Suva Nausori corridor, Nadi, Lautoka and Labasa while some small scale replacements were carried out in Levuka and Ba.
He added this year they will be start work in Rakiraki, Sigatoka, Rotuma, Taveuni and Levuka.
Kumar said it may take three to four years to catch up with the huge backlog however this will be a continual exercise.
Ceased meters are given an estimate bill by the Water Authority meter readers, for them to at least gauge some consumption by the customer.
The replacement of ceased and defective water meters are done for free by the Water Authority.
