Unaisi Bolatolu Vuniwaqa is the first Fijian woman to be appointed as the Commissioner of Police for the United Nations Mission in South Sudan.
This was highlighted by the Minister for Defence and National Security, Ratu Inoke Kubuabola during his ministerial statement.
Kubuabola also stated that this is the highest post achieved by any officer of the Fiji Police Force which is encouraging to all women in the discipline forces and those considering to join the force.
SODELPA MP, Semesa Karavaki says this is a big achievement for women in Fiji but unfortunately it takes the United Nations to recognise this.
He further said what the Minister didn’t say is whether she had resigned from the police force and applied for this position.
Karavaki says Vuniwaqa had been sitting at the Police Headquarters knocking at the door for the possibility to become the first woman to be the Police Commissioner in Fiji and it did not happen but all the time somebody from outside is brought in to be the Commissioner of Police.
In response Kubuabola said that Vuniwaqa was seconded to the UN and she is still with the Fiji Police Force.
