Voter turnout during the elections is mostly affected by the type of political environment that is in place.
This was highlighted by the Supervisor of Elections Mohammed Saneem during the Straight Talk, talkback show on our sister station, Viti FM.
Saneem says sometimes the negative political environment created by the political parties and candidates creates a lack of interest in the elections systems.
He says that because in Fiji registration is voluntary, the Elections Office can say that there is a high level of interest because a high level of people are registering.
Saneem says that the total number of registered voters as of December 2017 is 624,404 compared to around 591,000 total registered voters in 2014.
He says that there are a total of 2,149 polling stations for this year’s election.
