A video has now been released of the 45 Fijian UN peacekeepers who are held in Syria.
In the video, the 45 peacekeepers are seen sitting behind two men.
One of our peacekeepers, Captain Savenaca Siwatibau Rabuka then sends out a message to everyone that they are safe and will be released soon.
The video also has a spokesperson of the group holding the Fijian UN peacekeepers assuring all their families that these men are safe and will be released.
The spokesperson said that their religion teaches people peace and love, and they never did anything wrong.
The spokesperson also said that they are only discussing one point with the United Nations, and everything will be over when that is finalised.
The statement by the Fijian officials yesterday that an agreement was reached and the peacekeepers will be released in the coming days without any conditions and demands reflected a strong hope for the safety of our 45 UN peacekeepers and were without consultations with the United Nations and other parties.
The Government said the safety and the soonest release of the 45 Fijian peacekeepers, who are still currently held in Syria by an Al-Qaeda linked group is paramount to the Fijian Government.
It also said it is working to support the United Nations and is calling on all parties to assist in the release of our peacekeepers and ensure their safe return to their families and loved ones.
Meanwhile, Army Commander Brigadier General Mosese Tikoitoga said the families of the soldiers are advised to visit or contact the RFMF camps should they need additional information about our peacekeepers.
