Attorney General, Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum has officially opened the Vatuwaqa Funeral Rites Facility which was built by the government at a cost $920,000.
While speaking at the opening ceremony, Sayed-Khaiyum says that some people had asked him why he is doing this to the Hindu community and he said that the facility is important in completing the final rites of a person’s funeral in the Hindu religion.
Sayed-Khaiyum also said it is small people that make religion a fighting tool.
The Attorney General has also highlighted that similar plans are also in place for Funeral Rites Facilities to be built in various parts of the country including Lautoka, Nadi and Vanua levu while work on another facility in Nausori is currently underway.
The event has also marked a historic moment whereby all Hindu religious bodies have come together to form one committee compromising of representatives from the various religious groups.
This committee will look after the facility.
These various Hindu religious groups have also contributed $1,000 each to help maintain the facility.
President of the Vatuwaqa Funeral Rites Committee, Sadasivan Naicker says the facility will be used for free by all communities that need it.
