Universities in Fiji are requested to have discussions with their students and relevant stakeholders to solve the problem of accommodation fees for those who study under the Tertiary Education Loans Scheme.
While responding to the request at the University of Fiji during the 2017/2018 National Budget Consultation in Lautoka, Attorney General and Minister for Economy Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum says it should be in the interest of the Universities to see that their students feel good when they study.
He says that Universities should also take responsibility of providing accommodation for their students.
Students asked the Attorney General if accommodation allowance for TELS students could be increased since there are only few rental flats that are below $250 in the Western Division.
The Minister assured them that the government will also have discussions with the relevant stakeholders.
However, he also asked the students to report the matter to the Fiji Commerce Commission if their landlords increase the rent after they sign the agreement.
He told the students that they should know that residential rent increase has been frozen.
