It is not the responsibility of the Union to go and inspect the work of the teachers and grade them or assess them.
This is according to the Fiji Teachers Union, General Secretary Agni Deo Singh while responding to a comment made by the Education Minister, Dr. Mahendra Reddy earlier in the week.
While speaking at the Fijian Teachers Association 2015 Conference, Mahendra Reddy had said that he is looking forward to the day when the Unions will submit him a list of teacher’s names from their members who are not performing and should be demoted or disciplined for shortchanging the employer, the students and bringing disrepute to the profession.
However, Singh says this is not their responsibility and the Ministry has head of schools, head of departments and education officers who are tasked with the responsibility of ensuring and monitoring teachers’ performance.
He says appropriate action should be taken when there is poor performance.
Singh says the Ministry should be responsible for counseling and taking disciplinary action against teachers.
