The crew of the US Destroyer ship USS Michael Murphy were greeted with smiles as they visited the Samabula Old People’s Home this morning.

As part of their community relations participation, the crew helped clean the Home and even planted cassava for the residents.

Petty Officer Second Class, Kyle Carrero says it is a humbling experience to visit Fiji and give back to communities that need help.

Carrero says helping the staff at the Home plant cassava was a fantastic way to experience life in the Pacific.

Samabula Old People’s Home Manager, Clement Dari says the visit was a good exchange of love and culture.

The guided missile destroyer, USS Michael Murphy arrived in Suva this morning for a routine port visit.

She is a multi‑mission guided missile destroyer designed to defend against air, surface and subsurface threats, and conduct strike operations.

The ship and crew of more than 300 sailors departed from Joint Base Pearl Harbor Hickam early this month for a regularly scheduled Western Pacific deployment.
